Growth

I am not really good with plants. I think the reason I still have so many is because they're mostly self-sufficient. They don't need much intervention and there aren't really predators in my home (I keep them largely out of reach of the cats).

I just water them once a week and re-pot them if they're getting too big.

I have a jade that has had some sort of bug or fungus or something. There was a white fuzzy stuff around the base of many of the leaves and I had to remove some of them so the whole plant looked kind of bald on one side. I thought it was the beginning of the end, but I noticed that the leaves are actually growing back. Now I see tiny leaves on the bald side of the plant, and it looks like whatever was plaguing the plant is gone.

I'm really happy about this. Jades are probably my favorite house plant and I've killed two as an adult and I'm really hoping to have one that grows into an actual tree (I know this takes forever, but I've got some time). This jade was traumatized when I moved into this apartment because it was upended on the drive over and I feared the worst. But he's sturdy and resilient.

This plant is a hopeful metaphor for some issues I've been dealing with recently regarding forgiveness and healing. It's nice to know that even though something bad happens and something is destroyed (or so you think), there can be regrowth.

Well done, Jade.

I have a jade that a student gave me when I was teaching him in second grade. He's now a senior and I have moved it to six different homes. It was almost dead about six times too. But now that it is out in humidity about 11 months of the year, it is the happiest jade ever. It's much bigger too.
