Definition

Potential:
1. a nice way of saying that things aren't good enough now
2. a word used to push deadlines farther out to some undefined future point
3. this word sucks

Totally agree. When I hear that word all I think of is a twenty-something describing her not-good-enough boyfriend (and I'm totally including myself in that group!)

That should be your next poll - what's a genuinely good use of the word "potential" :)

We use that in some form as a teacher comment on report cards a LOT, mainly for the reasons you posted.
