Food for thought

I need to get my eating under control. SERIOUSLY. I’m not overweight; I’m in good shape what with all the yoga and walking up to the third floor and the 30-day-shredding and all. BUT:

I eat when I’m not hungry, and when I’m done eating, I think about the next thing I can eat. So, because I’m into embarrassing myself (and outing myself as a food-a-holic). I would like to present you with a list of things that I eat in a typical day:

7:00 – 1 whole grain Eggo waffle (or Trader Joe’s equivalent) and if I’m feeling it, a Morningstar veggie sausage patty*, glass of skim milk**

8:00 – 1 cup of coffee, skim milk, no sugar

9:00 – 1 Luna Bar or some other sort of “bar” consisting of granola-y bits, and dried fruit and/or yogurt-product

10:00 – 1 small handful of trail mix consisting of the exact same constituents as the “bar”, only loose.

10:30 – just 1 more small handful

11:45 – LUNCH! Sometimes leftovers from last night’s dinner, sometimes a sandwich from the snooty coffeeshop on Mass Ave

1:30 or 2:00 – If I’m good, a piece of fruit or some pre-cut fruit chunks (apple, banana, strawberry, mango), if I’m not good, saltysalty CHIPS from the machine

3:00 – approximately 16 Reese’s Pieces as I walk past the FREE*** candy dispenser in the lobby

4:22 – maybe another small handful of trail mix

--The only reason that I don’t eat anything between 5:00pm and 5:35pm is that I’m driving home and I don’t keep food in the car.—

5:45 – just something small from the fridge, maybe a few olives…

6:30-7:30 – make and eat dinner, variable ingredients, generally consisting of vegetables, a protein, and a starchy/grainy thing

After this, I can usually manage not to eat again. Unless there are cookies.

Most of the day I drink water. I almost never drink soda. When I have dinner out with friends or the Man I usually have between one and three drinks.

So what do you think? Tapeworm? Because I’m kind of thinking tapeworm. It’s just that I know people who eat ALMOST NOTHING all day and they’re still standing at the end of the day. Granted: I am not eating out of hunger at least 50% of the time; it is boredom. But I really need to cut down. Occasionally I bring a Ziploc baggie of lettuce and just graze on it, but that takes time in the morning (to wash the lettuce and insert it into a bag oh my I am lazy) and I don’t like to do anything in the morning except shower and get dressed (and eat, duh).

Ugh. And I’m really good with controlling OTHER things; you’d think I’d be able to handle this. I try. I’ll just have to try harder…

*I hate the word “patty” as a description of food, despite liking many things in patty-form.

**I know it doesn’t sound bad yet, but wait, there’s more

***Un. Fair****

****And sometimes I pass this machine more than once in a day and it takes great willpower NOT to eat from it because I am not a person that can pass up free food.

EDITED TO ADD: Today I've managed just the breakfast and Luna Bar so far. And FYI I totally have fruit for a snack later. I may be able to make it until lunch without the trail mix. Maybe the key is just more awareness of the absurdity of shoving food in my mouth at every turn...

That's not a lot of food. You feel like it is because you're eating what sound like tiny portions at multiple times during the day and you're still starving. The small/frequent meals thing is actually great, but I bet you're not getting enough protein and almost no fat. That's why you're hungry. That's my guess.

I'm not blowing smoke up your ass, I swear: When I read that, I was thinking the entire time that that wasn't a lot of eating or food. That seemed perfectly normal and healthy to me. I'd say, if it's working, go with it and cut yourself some slack.
