Two vignettes

The first:
Monday last was A's birthday, so J and I stopped by the Whole Foods on River Street to get her some flowers. This particular Whole Foods has an escalator and stairs, and I usually take the stairs. I mentioned this to J, who gave me a look that said: "Whatever, take your stairs, you weirdo" as she approached the escalator. As I started climbing the stairs I looked over at her and I couldn't see her - because she had crouched down and started running up the escalator. I started taking the stairs two at a time, but since she knew we were racing and I did not, she had a head start (on the escalator, mind you) and won. As I got to the top she was pointing and laughing (and actually I was laughing so hard I could hardly breathe). J does not run, you see...
Yes, J, that was a triumph. Touché.

And the second:
Textversation with my brother
J: Is Dad's birthday tomorrow?
Leslie: No. It's Thursday.
J: I don't think so. I think it's tomorrow.
L: Yes! We do this every year and I am always always right.

I am always right. And we do do this every year. Every time, my mother, brother, and I question which day is my Dad's birthday. It's always on the 29th.
