Oh Christ, Haiti...
So, to sum up there was an earthquake in Haiti. You probably already know. I didn't know until I came into work, because I have no tv channels, don't check my computer after getting home (usually), and don't listen to NPR much on the ride into work.
On one hand, though I'm moved by the tragedy, I can distance myself from it. I don't know anyone in Haiti. But that's really just a defense. I know that if I was watching this on tv - LOOKING at the people there, I'd break, just like the Christmas my parents and I spent watching coverage of the tsunami in Thailand.
I don't know what to do with this - where to put it. People are walking around the office like it's any other day. And it is, for us, I guess. I still need to place orders. Moms still need to shuttle their kids around to playgroups. People need to go to the dentist. But… still. My thoughts go out to the people in Haiti and their families. Because after the shock of what’s happened there’s so much left to do. Things won’t be the same as they were before. And even before, Haiti was still the poorest country in the Americas, rife with disease. And now it’s WORSE.
It’s over to Doctors Without Borders for me. Like after the tsunami. We do what we can. If you have any wonderful ideas of what to, you can post them in the comments. I know I read on the delightful SouleMama blog that there is a Caps to Cap-Hatien project, where people send blankets and baby hats to Haiti for newborns. Anything else?
I guess a good start is being grateful for having a job, a healthy family, and supportive friends. Also, not wasting the opportunities I have. Thanks to all of you.
PS. Completely unrelated: if you want to get even more pissed about women in the media, check this out: Objects in the mirror.

RE: objects in the mirror. wow. and wow.
It's extremely nominal in light of the magnitude of the tragedy but the Red Cross has set up a way to text your donation...
text "HAITI" to 90999
Doing that will add $10 to your next cell phone bill. It's what I did this morning.
