Brrrrr!
Seriously, it's cold and bleak and treacherously icy (at least it is at my house, because my landlord did kind of a piss-poor job clearing the snow...).
I took this while I was doing a stage-crew work day with the theatre people for Dracula. We needed to move all kinds of things from our storage space to our performance space, then build some things. I know a lot less about building stage-stuff than most of them, so I used my special skill of buying munchkins and a Box of Joe for everyone. That was my main contribution.
Last night I was talking to my man (who it appears* is about to get at least one if not two job offers** in the next few weeks) about alternative energy. People seem to want to believe whatever they want as long as it's rosy. We both worked for an Algae-to-biodiesel company, and let me tell you - there are kinks! There's one guy (I think unrelated to the place we worked) who is claiming that he drove across country on biodiesel he made. BUT! He was driving an electric car, so, yeah, there was biodeisel in it, but whether or not any of that fuel was used to power the vehicle is unclear. Most of the "evidence" that people cling to to indicate success is VERY misleading. It's all marketing! I'm confident that several of the new technologies will work out and really contribute to lessening the impact we make on the planet, but it's not MAGIC, people. In any case. at one point our conversation went like this:
M: People just expect that if they put all the pieces together they'll get...
Les: Unicorns?
M: Exactly.
So, we don't get unicorns. Just lots more questions. That I hope will lead to good answers about alternative energy/fuel.
*This is awesome, as next Tuesday marks the one-year anniversary we were laid off. He's been doing a bunch of good work in the meantime, but it's nice to have a stable job, so you can, you know, provide heat and sushi and kitchen appliances and Red Bull for your beautiful girlfriend and her two cats.
**This is not to say that he will definitely take one of these opportunities, but when it rains, it pours, yes?
